Semi Truck Repair

The open road brings with it many hazards for long haul truckers. Between weather conditions and the other drivers on the road, not to mention the size and dimensions of a semi that needs to be accounted for, opportunities for trouble lurk at every mile marker. Often, issues can arise unexpectedly and when they do, you’re almost guaranteed to be sidelined waiting for a tow truck or roadside assistance.

Issues that occur out on the open road can be small in the grand scheme of your truck’s complexity and function, but it’s these small issues that can set you back the furthest on delivery timelines. Take a look at five of them to watch out for and what you can do in the way of preventative semi truck repair to keep yourself and your truck out of harm’s way:

1. Tire blowouts and tread stripping: Far and away the number one concern for long haul truckers on the road as it pertains to their vehicle are issues involving tires—primarily blowouts and tread stripping. Simply put, these issues occur when tires are put through their paces over thousands and thousands of miles. Inspect your treads at regular intervals and make sure to have tires appropriately inflated, rotated, and aligned.

2. Radiator malfunctions: If your semi is unable to cool its engine down, it’s going to result in overheating on the side of the road. Coupled with sidelining you, an engine unable to cool itself is also going to result in damaged components, which could mean a tow rather than roadside repairs! The best thing you can do is to make sure radiator fluids are topped off and that any “check engine” lights are addressed by a technician.

3. Oil leakage and burning: Leaking oil is going to result in a lack of engine oil, which will result in friction within the oil environment, leading to… you guessed it: a breakdown! Keep an eye on oil pressure and have it changed regularly. Also, keep an eye out for spots of oil where you park.

4. Alternator or battery faults: Do your truck’s lights flicker as you idle or do you have trouble turning the engine over after extended periods of being parked? This could signal an alternator issue.
